Executive Diary – Choosing the right employees

In today’s competitive job market, finding the right employees for your company is crucial for long-term success. When it comes to VA For Everyone, a company providing IT developers to businesses in Australia, selecting candidates with the right qualifications and skills is paramount. In this article, we will discuss the importance of considering candidates with at least a bachelor’s degree in IT development. This criterion provides valuable insights into an individual’s commitment, consistency, and potential for growth within your company.

This doesn’t mean that I exclude candidates who don’t have the qualification. However, they need to demonstrate exotic characteristics to convince me that they are the people for the job.

There are quite a few advantages that comes with a degree:

  • Demonstrates Commitment and Persistence
  • Showcases Strong Work Ethic
  • Acquires Foundational Knowledge and Skills
  • Adaptable and Open to Learning

Demonstrates Commitment and Persistence

Completing a bachelor’s degree in IT development requires a significant investment of time, energy, and dedication. Therefore, candidates who have successfully obtained this degree have proven their commitment to a specific field of study over a span of four years. This dedication suggests that they possess the determination and persistence required to meet challenges head-on, which can be an asset in a dynamic work environment.

This translates into a higher chance that they will stay with me and the company for longer. If you employ people, you know that retaining employees is one of the hardest thing to do. We need to do everything to keep them happy and therefore hopefully they will stay with the company for a bit longer. As a result, if I get someone who has a degree, chances are they will stay with me for longer if I treat them well.

Showcases Strong Work Ethic

Earning a bachelor’s degree demonstrates that candidates possess the discipline and work ethic necessary to consistently pursue goals. The academic rigours of completing a degree require individuals to manage their time effectively, meet deadlines, and balance multiple responsibilities. These qualities are highly transferable to the professional realm, where meeting project deadlines and working collaboratively are essential.

I have seen this trait from candidates who have not graduated from a university. However, the percentage of this showing in candidates with bachelor degree is much higher. They have been trained in 4 years of university to work with other people, managing deadlines, optimizing their time, etc. This means that we may not need to teach them too much on those soft skills.

Acquires Foundational Knowledge and Skills

A bachelor’s degree in IT development equips individuals with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills relevant to their field. Coursework typically covers programming languages, database management, software development methodologies, and other technical aspects of IT. This education ensures that employees possess the fundamental knowledge required to contribute to the company’s projects from day one.

Adaptable and Open to Learning

A bachelor’s degree not only provides technical knowledge but also fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Through various coursework and assignments, students develop the ability to adapt to new technologies, learn independently, and acquire new skills. Thus, hiring candidates who have completed a bachelor’s degree demonstrates their openness to learning and their willingness to stay updated in a rapidly evolving field like IT development.

Summary

Selecting the right employees is essential for the success of VA For Everyone, a company providing IT developers to businesses in Australia. By emphasizing the importance of candidates with at least a bachelor’s degree in IT development, I can tap into a talent pool that possesses commitment, persistence, a strong work ethic, and a solid foundation of technical knowledge. It’s not the only thing that I look for, but surely it’s one of the criteria that I consider when employing our people.

We will continue the discussion in the next article, where I reveal more criteria that I use to find the right candidate for our clients.
